This is a special election to fill the remainder of former Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s term – after 17 years in Congress, McCarthy resigned after he was ousted as House Speaker. The primary for the seat’s full term was on March 5, and the candidates on the ballot are largely the same. State assembly member Vince Fong (R) and Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux (R) advanced in the primary for the full term, but Democrat Marisa Wood came in a close third.
If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two will advance to a special general election May 21. Polls close at 11 p.m. Eastern.
